The birth of LED lighting

The birth of LED lighting When Edison presented his electric lighting in the form of light bulbs in 1879, it was a revolution. The very first LED lamp was invented as early as 1927 by Russian professor Oleg Vladimirovich Losev. He discovered that diodes emitted light when current passed through them. He published details about his LEDs in a Russian magazine in 1927 and applied for a patent on them.

However, it wasn't until the 1990s that LED lighting technology developed further when Shuji Nakamura had invented blue and white LEDs.

These years also saw the arrival of the halogen lamp, a light bulb that produced light with a small amount of halogen gas and a filament. The halogen bulb never became very popular, the light was not bright, the lifespan was limited, and despite being called an "energy-saving bulb," it was not very energy efficient.

Only at the beginning of this century, the LED could actually be used for functional lighting purposes. Whereas in the beginning LED lamps still had the blue cold appearance, now all light color temperatures are possible, from warm white (atmospheric like the old-fashioned incandescent lamp) to natural daylight. In addition, RGB (Red Green Blue) is possible as well as LED lighting in 520NM (nanometer) with hue green and 850NM with infrared illumination.

The global social and political call to reduce global warming has ensured that within the EU the incandescent lamp has been gradually replaced by energy efficient LED lamps since 2009.
