Sustainability drive in Olst-Wijhe: public lighting greener and smarter

Sustainability drive in Olst-Wijhe: public lighting greener and smarter Recently, we have made a sustainability move in terms of street lighting,” the municipality of Olst-Wijhe announces. Almost all lampposts in the municipality now use energy-efficient LED lighting. Experiments are also being conducted in other ways to make them even more sustainable.

Currently, some 3,300 of the 3,550 lampposts are using energy-efficient LED lighting. “Plus, we are experimenting with 55 hybrid lampposts that store solar energy during the day to use at night,” the municipality explained.

Experiment
Tom van Leeuwe, who specializes in integral management & maintenance of public space for the municipality of Olst-Wijhe, told earlier about the fixtures (support structure) used in the experiment, “When the sun shines, the energy is stored. It is used the moment the lights are turned on. If there is insufficient solar energy, the fixtures switch to the electricity grid. So as a result, the lights are on even if the batteries are not charged when there is not enough sun.” The batteries have a lifespan of about 10 years.

Greener and smarter
In addition to making public lighting greener and smarter with the energy-efficient LED lighting, the lamps need to be repaired or replaced less often. Since this month, Limitec, an organization active in the field of outdoor lighting, performs maintenance only on specific dates.
